man’s nature. This is definitely stated in Matthew’s Gospel: “Be not afraid of them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul” (10:28). So the something additional to killing the body, which men cannot do, is killing the soul; and that which continues alive, when the body is crucified, or burned at the stake, is the soul (ψυχή). It is important to observe this use of the term soul, for it is sometimes employed to denote the animal life which perishes with the body. Here, on the contrary,
